Use this checklist to assist you in teaching the curriculum with fidelity. This will support your confidence in the instruction of the material and your students' success and engagement with the information and activities.
For Kindergarten - 8th grade, the grade-level lessons are designed to be completed in the presented sequence for each grade level, with each lesson being taught using the provided lesson plan content.
Planning for your grade level
- Read the Teaching the Curriculum with Fidelity document.
NOTE: The Educator Training Center is coming in 2026! - Review the grade-level lesson content before teaching lessons.
- Review the scope and sequence for alignment with standards and student “I can…” statements. The standards and “I can….” statements are also linked within the individual lessons.
- Review of all materials needed for the lessons.
- Review of the supporting interactive activities before teaching the lesson:
- Review lesson activities.
You will review more in-depth in lesson planning. - Review the resources and materials needed for print or display.
- Note which grade level lessons have included animations.
- Plan ahead how you may use the activities (individual, small group, large group).
- Review lesson activities.
- Test technology to ensure that the e-book, animations, and any included videos can be presented in a manner that supports your classroom.
- Determine if modifications, additional supports, or cultural elements are needed to support student participation.
- Each lesson includes an Exit Ticket for student reflection and to assist you in ensuring student comprehension of the material. Consider the variety of ways you can use Exit Tickets with students to increase engagement.
- Consider the lesson content and the length of your learning session with students. Determine if you need to use more than one class period to cover the lesson material.
- Plan ahead and be prepared for the possible questions that your students may have regarding the lesson content.
- Know your district/organization resources for supporting students who may express concerns about substance use, mental health, or social-emotional challenges.
Effective and Consistent Use of Pre- and Post-Student Surveys
- Read the Guidelines for Administering Pre and Post Student Assessments. These are located on the Teacher Hub - Resources - Curriculum Assessments
- Ensure that you have the technology necessary to administer the surveys to students.
- If you are not able to use the electronic survey format, request the printable surveys from Emily’s Hope.
- Administer the pre-survey before the instruction of the first lesson of each grade level.
- Administer the post-survey soon after the instruction of the last lesson of each grade level.
Individual Lesson Instruction
- Before teaching the lesson, read through the lesson content completely to ensure you fully understand the material.
- Review any resources in the lesson Resource Bank at the end of the lesson.
- If you determine that more than one learning session is needed for the lesson material, plan for the content that you will cover for each session. This will allow you to end the first session with a “preview” of what is coming next. You can then start the next learning session with a quick review of the previous material.
- Review the supporting interactive activities for the lesson.
- Read through all directions for the included activity/activities.
- Determine how you will complete the activity with students (individual, small group, large group).
- Print or prepare the necessary materials.
- Preview any animations that may be included in the lesson.
- Review the supporting chapter from the grade-level book.
- Determine if you will read the physical book or use the online e-book format with students.
- Determine if there are sections of the chapter to review an additional time to support lesson content.
- After covering the content, use the lesson Exit Ticket, to support student reflection and content comprehension.
- After the lesson instruction, do your own reflection on what went well and what you might do differently for the next lesson.
As you support students, remember that each one has a unique background and experience. Content in the lesson topics of Emotions, Pressures, and Substance Use Disorder may bring up questions or concerns for individual students. Know your district/organization resources for supporting students who may express concerns about substance use, mental health, or social-emotional challenges.
