The following guidelines can be used during both the pre- and post-assessment administration with students. Consistency is important - administer the pre- and post-assessments in a similar manner with students. It is essential that students are evaluated on their knowledge of curriculum content, rather than their reading comprehension or test-taking skills.
For additional information, logged-in Teacher Hub users can access further instructions and request that assessment links be resent here.
Note: Pre- and post-assessments were previously referred to as pre- and post-surveys.
If you are receiving financial support or a Preferred Partner, you are REQUIRED to administer assessments BEFORE and AFTER teaching lessons to your students.
For paying districts, we request that all educators administer a brief pre-assessment before the first grade-level lesson and a post-assessment after completing the last grade-level lesson of the curriculum. However, this is not required unless your district or state mandates it.
Pre and post-assessments for Emily’s Hope Substance Use Prevention Curriculum are an important component to help you monitor student progress and ensure that the implementation of the curriculum is supporting your students in learning important curriculum content, developing the skills needed to make healthy and safe choices, and supporting you in your instruction strategies. The pre- and post-assessments support Emily’s Hope in ensuring continued curriculum improvement and our continued research development.
Pre-assessments should be administered PRIOR to any instruction in the curriculum. The purpose of the pre-assessment is to determine what the student knows before instruction on the curriculum content begins. It can be helpful to explain this to students so that they do not become frustrated with assessment questions for which they may not know the answer.
Post-assessments should be administered AFTER the completion of the curriculum instruction. The purpose of the post-assessment is to determine what the student knows after instruction on the curriculum content.

- Explain to your students what pre-assessments and post-assessments are and the purpose of them. This will help them understand the purpose of them and be more comfortable in completing them.
- It may be difficult for students to complete assessments independently, so modifying the presentation to work for your students would be appropriate. An example of this:
- presenting the assessment questions on your Interactive board and reading the question aloud to them and walking students through responses, so that they can select the response that they believe is correct.
- As you consider how you can modify the presentation of the assessments to support students, ensure that you are NOT providing cues to the correct responses.
- Assessment questions and response choices can be read aloud to students.
- Plan your administration time when you can provide appropriate “wait time” for students to think through their responses.
- Assessment responses (in Elementary grades) include visual images to help students understand the text. This can be helpful to students who are dual language learners and students who need assistance with reading comprehension.
- Celebrate success! Create a fun and enjoyable learning environment that encourages student participation.
Thank you for your dedication in providing the best curriculum experience for your students with Emily’s Hope Substance Use Prevention Curriculum.

Can I see the results for my classroom?
After completing the post-curriculum assessments, we can generate section-level reports so you can see student improvement in your classroom. If you're interested, please get in touch with us after completing post-curriculum assessments. These may take 4-6 weeks to generate.
What if my school doesn't have computers or tablets to administer the surveys?
For research accuracy, we're requesting that schools administer the survey digitally. However, we understand each school is different and technology isn't always readily available to students. Please contact our team to get printable surveys. You will need to scan and email or mail each of the paper surveys to us.
